Newsletter – February 2018

Hi Folks,

Bully back as El Sec

The 2018 competition year is off and racing with several new members joining the ranks for the first comp of the year. Conditions were quite challenging with some members opting to pass this month. See Briggsy’s report for all the details. (The next comp is Sunday 4th March. Don’t forget next comp there will be no beach BBQ as we are going to the Shaws Bay Hotel from 2:00pm onwards following the comp.)

Your new 2018 committee has been elected, see the President’s inaugural address below for names of all the elected officers and his vision for the coming year.

Our social calendar has been listed on the web site, see the social scene for the full year calendar. We’ve planned a few more family-oriented events this year so we hope to see all those with kids come along and join in the fun.

Looking forward to a fun year! See you in the surf!

Mal on!

President’s Address

Welcome to incoming President Bruce Wilson, here Bruce gives us his vision for the coming year… Ed

Bruce – El Presidente!

Bruce’s vision for 2018 is to “Bring back the fun, have more rewards, broaden the appeal, and raise awareness!”

The committee reviewed last year’s events, identified problems, and proposed improvements to be adopted:

  • Bring back the fun
    • Always run comps, only postpone/cancel comps if unsafe
    • Allow 30 minute heats when conditions suit
    • Try a closer away comp at Evans Head
    • Music on the beach (MM to source a boom box)
    • Winter start time of 7:30am for 8:00am
  • Increase the appeal of membership
    • Membership includes T-Shirt, cap, stubbie cooler, and sticker with club signage.
    • Improve the judging
      • Appoint a spotter to alert judges to surfers taking off.
      • Move judges towards the point to avoid vision impaired by sun glare. Perhaps provide a judging tent near the point.
    • Overseas trip and Evans Head away trip plus trips looking at up to 2 hours travelling time for weekends away.
    • Broaden appeal to families. In the past social events tend to always be at restaurants on Saturday nights, plan some child friendly venues such as at  Missingham Bridge Park (free sausage sizzle) , Shaws Bay Hotel on a Sunday after comps.
  • Raise awareness
    • Advertising of events on Paradise FM
    • Bunnings BBQ fund raisers. MM to investigate with Bunnings.
    • Move post event BBQs down to the beach

Competition Scene

Our new roving reporter Briggsie reports on the last comp…Ed

The Spirit of the ANZACS lived on for the first Mal comp of 2018.

Challenging conditions to say the least but some made it look easy!

As it looked, so it was, Shite! Rips, big water movements, wind and rain all combined to make a memorable but forgettable session.

Mastering the conditions best and the occasional ride-able wave were:

  • 1sts – Johnny Hanley, Matt Hanley, and that old sly sea dog, Phil Geraghty
  • 2nds – Mick Callan, Col Harper, and Bill Webster
  • 3rds  – Will Haylock, Ed Riordan, and Chris Bull
  • 4ths –  Andrew Russell, Troy Jennner, and Jan Webster
Great to see ex-Captain Ed back on the beach even if he did beat me in our heat!

All participants deserve a medal, conditions can only get better throughout the year. Great to see some club spirit. Welcome to the new members, pleasing to see some new blood.

C u all next month on Sunday 4th March.

Briggsie [your beach-side correspondent]

PS. Pikers on the morning were duly noted and extra duties will be assigned by the committee.

2017 Annual Presso’ Wrap Up

Fellow loggers,

The 2017 competition season wrapped up last Sunday with members rocking up to Cherry St Sports club board room for the annual presentation.

Before the presentations members were treated to complimentary meat and cheese platters while having a few drinks and chatting about the 2017 comp year outcomes and lodging their  votes for the Club Person of the Year and Goofy’s Choice awards.

Ballina Men’s Shed did a great job on this year’s trophies!,

The divisional placings Trophies this year were made by the Ballina Men’s Shed and featured a polished timber long-board atop a wave. Thanks to Bruce Wilson for coming up with the design and organising their production.

VP Bruce Wilson took centre stage, and with the assistance of Steve Watts and his lovely side-kick (his wife) Carmel, proceeded to hand out the trophies.

Firsts: 1. Steve Watts (Club Champion) 2. Chris Bull

Seconds: 1. Peter Briggs 2. Col Harper

Thirds: 1. Bob Wilcox 2. Paul Bioletti

Fourths: 1. Bill Webster, 2. Jan Webster

A big thank you goes to the committee this year, Bruce & Steve for filling in due to workload and illness knocking out President Frank & Captain Ed, Treasurer Mark, Risk Manager Col,  and Bill for their commitment to the monthly committee meetings and catering, and sisters Kerry & Jan for organising our eagerly anticipated social events throughout 2017. Col Woodbry, our new Risk Manager, also did a great job of getting us compliant with our insurer this year, thank Col! Also thanks to Peter & Marg Bryant for looking after the club trailer and transporting it to our events. And finally a huge “well done” to all the competitors this year who made 2017 a successful year under difficult circumstances.

Congratulations to all the winners this year, it is no coincidence all the winners competed regularly at the monthly comps. That’s the go with point score comps, you’ve got to surf regularly!

VP Bruce Wilson cleaned up winning Club Person of the Year and the Goofy’s Choice trophies!
Bully was stoked to win second place this year.

Message from your Acting President

Aloha fellow flattie crew,

This year we had seen crowds growing at our beloved Flattie, car park always full, sand shifting inside the point, some good days and some bad. It also went without saying the numbers were down for the club rounds this year with injuries, illnesses, travelling, setting up a new business establishments which in turn saw some of the regular members out of action even though we managed to hold the comps on a regular basis only postponing in conditions that were not favourable to surf.

Looking over this year I have seen core members step up and would like to thank them on behalf of the club for their support in 2017.

Chris B I don’t envy your role as club secretary and I take my hat off to you, great job Chris. Special thanks goes out to Bill Webster always willing to add his support where and when he can, now that’s what this club is all about. Mark M the gatekeeper of our funds good work Mark. There was also VC Steve W thrown in the deep end due to Ed’s operation in taking over the Captains job which is not an easy role being responsible and accountable to ensure the monthly comps run smoothly and safely, thanks Steve. Then there are the ones that sometimes I think we take for granted that help out behind the scenes such as Peter & Marg B always looking after the clubs trailer and equipment you have been doing it for years now, thanks guys. Where would we be without the girls from the Social club Jan W, Kerry W, Marg B, who keep together the agenda for our social events, good work girls hope to see some fun events for 2018.  Then there are those that help set up the comp site, judge on the day, cater for the crew thank you all. There was one person who I noticed we missed this year and that was Eric Walkers contribution with the judging, so I am hoping to see you back in the water with us next year Eric.

Congratulations goes out to all those members that were awarded trophies this year, well done it was a good turnout on the day. We are also looking for members that may want to assist or be part of the committee for 2018 if you feel you can contribute let us know. Our AGM is will be held on the first comp round in February 2018. I am looking at attaching a survey for our members to fill in with their membership forms as well at the AGM.

So thus ends another year for the club, I wish you a Merry Xmas and a Happy Prosperous New Year to you and your families.

Thank you to all our sponsors for their support throughout the year; hope to see you onboard next year.

Stay wet, stay safe & hope to see you in the water.

VP Bruce E Wilson

December 2017 – Newsletter

Fellow Loggers,

Well our 2017 competition year is done and dusted, all that’s left is to declare the winners and present the trophies at the Annual Presentation tomorrow arvo’. See the social scene report following for all the details.

Our December comp went well with a good attendance and some sizeable waves, albeit a bit messy. See the comp scene report.

Overall it’s been a challenging year with numbers down in the latter months due to members away traveling, some unfortunate illnesses, as well as time-devouring new business ventures for some members (Frank & Geoff).

Still we managed to surf 9 out of 11 possible comps so that’s testament to our commitment to run comps unless the conditions are unsafe or there’s absolutely no waves.

Over the year we’ve had some really great waves at our local break at Flat Rock, and it’s great to feel comfortable in the water when you paddle out and see your mates there ! That’s why I joined our great club.

I hope you all enjoyed the 2017 competition year and you have a relaxing holiday break. i look forward to caching up and surfing with mates again in 2018!

See you at the Presso!

Comp Scene

Last Sunday we met for our last competition round of 2017. It was a rainy morning with conditions threatening to go downhill fast with the nor’ easter just starting to blow onshore and the ocean empty except for one super keen longboarder. The surf was a good size of 1 to 1.5 metres but the ocean was messy after the howling nor’ easter on the previous day. Club Captain Steve Watts made the call to go ahead with the comp.

Twelve members competed in improving conditions throughout the morning with the final heats enjoying cleaner waves. Finding good waves in the shifting peaks was challenging, Steve Watts and Phil Geraghty managed to score some standout waves and Col Harper was seen walking the board which impressed the judges.

After the comp members enjoyed a sausage sizzle and cold beers while Captain Steve declared the day a success and read out the results.

First Division: 1. Steve Watts, 2. Phil Geraghty, 3. Kerry Wilcox.

Second Division: 1. Pete Briggs, 2. Col Harper, 3. Bruce Wilson.

Third Division: 1. Kim Kortick, 2. Equal – Paul Bioletti & Chris Bull.

Fourth Division: 1. Bob Wilcox, 2. Jan Webster, 3. Bill Webster.

Winner of the sponsors raffles:

  • Malibu Burgers – Peter Briggs
  • Coast @ Lennox Café – Chris Bull
  • Barbary Coast Barbers – Steve Watt

A big thanks to all our generous raffle sponsors and our major sponsor Cherry St Sports Club for their ongoing support throughout 2017.

Social Scene

Trophies will be awarded for the following places:

  • First and second places in divisions one to four.
  • Most Improved.
  • Club Person of the Year.
  • Club Champion – Alan Rich Memorial trophy presented by Evelyn Rich.

We hope to see you all there !

See you in the surf!

I hope to distribute our final newsletter in December detailing all the annual results. Until then see you in the surf!

Competition Scene

Members were greeted by good surfing conditions in the 2-4′ range with light offshore breezes at Flat Rock. Everyone surfed well with some stand out performances from Bob Wilcox and Col Harper.  It was good to see Brian Fryer, Mick Wilson, and Phil Calnan back in the water competing! We hear Mick suffered a broken leg rope after his first wave which mean a long swim that handicapped him on the day. Good story!

1sts: 1st Steve Watts, 2nd Jonny Hanley, 3rd Bill Webster

2nds: 1st Col Harper, 2nd Bob Wilcox, 3rd Phil Calnan

3rds: 1st Kim Kortick, 2nd Mick Wilson

4ths: 1st   Byran Fryer, 2nd Jan Webster

Jan making her way back to the point …

Following the absence of catering at the October round Bill Webster did a great job of providing competitors with morning tea, and post comp food and cold beers. Well done Bill!

Winners of the monthly sponsor prizes were:

Steve Watts – The Coast Cafe

Bill Webster – Barbary Haircut

Kim Kortick – Ballina Malibu Burger

A big thank you to all our sponsors for their support throughout 2017.

Our final comp round is on Sunday 3rd December. We hope to see a big turnout for the final round of 2017.

Social Scene

Our November social event was a fun night with some 20 members and their partners enjoying the newly refurbished premises at our major sponsor Cherry Street Sports Club.

The crew enjoying a tasty feed. Pete Bryant reckons his was the best Seafood Linguini he has ever tasted!  P.S. That’s Phil Calnan’s head at the bottom of the picture. Don’t you hate it when someone take a pic without announcing it! Sorry Phil.

The new club layout features a larger bar service, spacious dining, and more entertaining areas. Being the night of the official launch of the new layout, the club was packed with patrons keen to party. The Cheery Street staff did an amazing job of keeping up with the  throng of patrons! Well done Cherry Street!

Pete & Eric enjoying the new club premises. Check out the table location, front rows seat to enjoy a great covers band!

Local  band Fossil Rock played from 8:30pm to midnight with just one break. They played lots of great favorites and really had the crowd raging. I must make special mention of the BMC members who danced the night away to the very last song – Kerry & Pete, Jan & Bill, Mark M, Bryan & Sue, and Chris & Helen.

The hard-core partying crew who stayed until the end!

Check out this video for a sample of the great music on the night…

Our final social event for the year is the Annual Presentation on Sunday December 10th. The presso’ starts at 4pm in the Cheery Street Sports boardroom. BMC will provide trays of nibbles before the awards. Members may choose to stay on for dinner if they’d like. Trophies will be awarded for all 4 divisions, Most Improved, and Club Person of the Year as voted by members on the day.  It would be great if members wear their BMC club shirts to show Cherry Street we are grateful for their generous ongoing support of our club.

Members Roamings

Brian Fryer and wife Sue are just back from a 2 week adventure tour to Kalimantan in Borneo where they had some up close and personal time with the world-famous endangered Orangutans of Borneo. Brian was really impressed by the level of service offered by the tour company, they felt safe and ate well during their 2 week stay. Being so close to the wild Orangutans will be a treasured lifelong memory.

The new van… 5 star!

Mick Wilson and Rosanna are back home after a 7 week European tour having toured through Italy and France and back home via LA.   Mick is certainly not having any trouble filling his time after his recent retirement, we hear he has upgraded his caravan and headed off with partner Rosanna to Broomes Head for a test run.
