Hi Folks,

Winter is well and truly upon us with chilly nights followed by mild sunny winter days. The surf has been consistent with waist to shoulder high waves and off-shore breezes and the water temp still very inviting.

The conditions at our last comp were testing with pounding sets wrapping around Flattie point giving those on the inside a real work out. Some great waves were still to be had if you picked the right spot to wait. See the Vice Captain’s report below for the results.

Captain Ed is recovering from his foot operation and won’t be in the surf for several months. We wish him  a speedy recovery. Vice Captain Steve Watts is filling in for Ed, and doing a fine job with getting the crew organised. Thanks Steve.

It was great to welcome back this month a former member and sponsor Nic Steele of Barber-y Coast barbers in Ballina. Nic has been playing a lot of footy that seems to have helped his surfing, scoring well in this month’s comp.

Our winter social event is coming up on 8th July, the theme is Curry & Jam Night ( as in music jam), check out the social report below for all the details.

Hope to see you all at the Curry & Jam night!

President’s Report

VP Bruce Wilson is filling in for President Frank who is working crazy hours at his new Coast@Lennox cafe venture. We wish Frank and partner Libee all the best in their new venture.

This report from Bruce:

We kicked off our June comp on Sunday with only a small turn up of members for the day’s proceedings.

As you know our illustrious Captain Ed is currently laid up after his operation so VC Stevie Watts stepped up to the podium to fill in for Ed.  Steve did a good job on the day, thank you Steve, you even handled the heckling from usual crew.

During the break Steve went over the Comp guidelines, a copy of which we have now laminated and placed on the whiteboard.  The day didn’t go without its ups & downs with Peter Briggs surfing in the wrong colour rashie and then pleading he was colour blind, don’t forget to bring a medical certificate to the next comp Peter!

The conditions were not favorable to those of us who got caught by the rip tow heading north, or were pounded by the sets on the inside. Outstanding surfers on the day were Steve W  & Nic the Barber who rejoined the club this year. We hope to we see more of Nic this year after he only surfed one round last year.

The Megaphone was introduced on Sunday which I had a great time with (just ask Chris Bull) as I do like to let my hair down / relax socially away from my 24-7 work routine when I see you guys.

I also mentioned on the day that the July comp is the last chance to order clothing, so far I have had a poor response so we may not be placing an order this year unless the numbers bulk up.

On Saturday our Club was the only local club that supported the Love Lennox Surfboard Swap meet. This year the number of boards & visitors was well down on last year. It was good to see Paul Abbott give a hand on Friday setting up the stall then he backed it up by spending the next day manning the site. Also supporting on the day was Mark Muszynski looking after the registrations plus the money side of the event, another one that stayed all day well done Mark & Paul it wouldn’t have happened without your support.

Ok enough waffling on from me clean waves to you all.

Captain’s Report

Sunday June 4th was a damp and chilly morning and not very inviting. Surf conditions were challenging with 3-4′ surf coming from the south. A band of just 12 intrepid members donned their wetsuits and pitted their skills, fitness and courage against the elements. The overall honors went to new club member Nick Steel who fought hard right to the end in each of his heats getting his best rides in the dying minutes of each.

Firsts: 1st Nick Steel, 2nd Steve Watts, 3rd Chris Bull

Seconds: 1st Pete Briggs, 2nd Bill Webster, 3rd Paul Abbott

Thirds: 1st Jeff Rees, 2nd Col Harper, 3rd Bruce Wilson

Fourths: 1st Phil Geraghy, equal 2nd  Marg Bryant and Bob May

Lucky draw winners: Malibu Burger: Bob May, Hair Cut at the Barber-y Coast: Col Harper, $50 meal voucher at Coast @Lennox Head, Nick Steel.
